The Goldsmith’s Art: Linguistic and Intercultural Heritage

The GALIC project is an interdisciplinary and multilingual research initiative devoted to the enhancement of the linguistic, cultural, and intercultural heritage of the art of goldsmithing.

Developed in collaboration among three universities in Campania – the University of Naples L’Orientale, the University of Naples “Parthenope”, and Suor Orsola Benincasa University – the project brings together complementary research units working in synergy toward the following goals:

  • the collection and analysis of historical, documentary, and artistic resources in French, English, and Italian, related to the goldsmithing tradition from the second half of the nineteenth century to the most recent materials;
  • the enhancement and digitalization of linguistic and cultural heritage through the creation of a trilingual corpus (French, English, Italian) and the expansion of the existing dictionary of goldsmithing (Dictionnaire de l’orfèvrerie. Termes, cultures, traditions, 2019), with the aim of making lexicographical and encyclopedic resources freely accessible in open-access format; and finally

  • the development of thematic and cultural pathways designed to promote the historical and artistic heritage of goldsmithing, in collaboration with industry experts and local artisans.

Through its multiple dimensions – linguistic, artistic, economic, and social – the GALIC project seeks to outline an integrated vision of the goldsmith’s art as a shared heritage, capable of bridging academic research with the local productive and cultural fabric.
